An accessible e-commerce experience lets customers discover products, understand their options, add items to a basket, and complete payment without being blocked by the interface. These journeys must work for people who navigate by keyboard, use a screen reader, enlarge text, rely on voice control, or need clear and predictable instructions.

Accessibility is not a feature that can be added only to the checkout page. A customer may encounter barriers in search, filters, product media, size or color selection, account creation, delivery options, validation messages, payment authentication, and order confirmation. One inaccessible step can prevent the entire purchase.

Why web accessibility matters for online stores

Accessible commerce supports a broader customer base and reduces avoidable friction across the buying journey. Many accessibility improvements also benefit people using a mobile device, shopping in bright light, dealing with a temporary injury, or working with a slow connection.

For organizations serving consumers in the European Union, accessibility may also be a legal requirement. The European Accessibility Act applies to covered services from 28 June 2025 and explicitly includes e-commerce services. Scope and exceptions depend on the organization and service, so businesses should assess their own obligations rather than treating a general checklist as legal advice.

Make product discovery operable

Search, navigation, category menus, filters, and sorting controls should be available without a mouse. Keyboard focus must remain visible and move in a logical order. When a filter changes the product list, screen reader users need an appropriate announcement that results have updated.

Product cards should use meaningful headings and links. Repeating vague link text such as “View” or “Learn more” makes it difficult to understand a list out of context. Include the product name in the accessible link text and avoid placing several competing links on the same card without a clear purpose.

Provide accessible product information

Customers need equivalent access to the information communicated through product photography, video, color, and layout. Useful alternative text should describe details that influence a purchase without repeating nearby text. Decorative images can use empty alternative text so they do not create noise.

Product variants require particular care. Color swatches need accessible names, selected states must be programmatically available, and unavailable combinations should be communicated without relying on color alone. Size guides, comparison tables, and downloadable documents should also be readable with assistive technology.

Videos that communicate product information may require captions, transcripts, or audio description depending on the content. Controls must be keyboard accessible and expose clear names and states.

Build an accessible basket and checkout

The basket should identify each product, quantity, price, discounts, and total in a clear structure. Customers must be able to change quantities or remove products using a keyboard and understand the result of the action. Time limits should be avoided or made adjustable when possible.

Checkout forms need persistent labels, logical grouping, suitable autocomplete attributes, and instructions that do not disappear when the customer begins typing. If validation fails, provide a summary and connect each message to the relevant field. Explain how to correct the problem instead of reporting only that a value is invalid.

Payment flows often include third-party components, embedded frames, or authentication steps. These remain part of the customer journey even when another provider supplies them. Test the complete transaction, including error, timeout, and declined-payment states.

Test complete shopping tasks

Automated tools are useful for finding certain code-level failures, such as missing accessible names or detectable contrast problems. They cannot determine every aspect of usability or confirm that a customer can finish a purchase.

A reliable testing plan combines:

  • Automated checks during development and deployment
  • Keyboard-only review of all interactive steps
  • Screen reader testing with real browsers and assistive technologies
  • Zoom, text resizing, reflow, and responsive layout checks
  • Testing with disabled users for important customer journeys

Prioritize issues by customer impact

Not every finding has the same effect on a purchase. Prioritize barriers that prevent customers from finding a product, selecting a variant, understanding price and delivery information, completing a form, paying, or receiving confirmation. Record the affected task and user group alongside the technical requirement so product teams understand why the fix matters.

After remediation, repeat the same task with the relevant keyboard and screen reader setup. A code change is not complete until the experience works and no new barrier has been introduced elsewhere in the flow.

Make accessibility part of commerce operations

Online stores change continuously through campaigns, new products, design-system updates, and third-party integrations. Add accessibility acceptance criteria to design and engineering work, provide guidance for content teams, and include critical purchase journeys in regression testing.
